Fossils are the preserved remains, or the traces of remains, of ancient animals and plants. They are rocks, preserving (parts of) organisms, such as bones, shells, plants, feathers, and more—usually tens of thousands to billions of years old. Fossils, or the process of fossilization, is rare, but when found, they tell us about life on earth millions of years ago, of the world and how it was, of how our planet has changed throughout history. Fossils have been found in the highest mountain ranges in the world, to the deepest mines mankind have dug.
